Centimeters, Millimeters and Inches Explained

If you have ever wondered how big a centimeter really is, or needed to turn inches into centimeters, this page covers both systems and how they relate. For instant numbers, jump to the length converter.
The two measurement systems
Two families of length units are in daily use. The US customary system is built on inches, feet, yards and miles. The metric system, also called SI, is built on the meter with decimal prefixes. Apart from the United States, Liberia and Myanmar, every country treats metric as its primary system. The UK runs both: heights and road distances in miles and feet, most other measurements in metric.
What is an inch (in)?
An inch is the everyday unit in the United States and the one you meet most often. One inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters. A US quarter is about one inch across, a credit card is 3.37 inches (85.60 mm) wide, and a US dollar bill is 6.14 inches long.
Feet, yards and miles
The larger US units do not follow a single base. One foot is 12 inches, one yard is 3 feet, and one mile is 1760 yards, or 63,360 inches.
| Unit | Symbol | In inches | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inch | in | 1 | Screens, pipe sizes, paper |
| Foot | ft | 12 | Height, room size |
| Yard | yd | 36 | Fabric, sports fields |
| Mile | mi | 63,360 | Road distance |
What is a centimeter (cm)?
A centimeter is a metric unit of length. There are 100 centimeters in a meter and 10 millimeters in a centimeter. A centimeter is roughly the width of a large paperclip, or the width of an adult fingernail.
What is a millimeter (mm)?
A millimeter is one tenth of a centimeter (0.1 cm) and one thousandth of a meter. It is the small unit on the fine ticks of a ruler, handy for precise work such as drawing, 3D printing, electronics or checking a screen's pixel pitch.
Millimeters, centimeters and meters
| Unit | Symbol | Relation to meter | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Millimeter | mm | 0.001 m | Machining, drawings, rainfall |
| Centimeter | cm | 0.01 m | Everyday measuring, school rulers |
| Decimeter | dm | 0.1 m | Rarely used |
| Meter | m | Base unit | Height, rooms, fabric |
| Kilometer | km | 1000 m | Road distance |
The metric system's advantage is that every step is a power of ten. Converting only moves the decimal point: 0.05 m equals 5 cm, which equals 50 mm, and no factor has to be memorized. On a typical ruler the smallest mark is 1 mm, with a longer line every 10 mm to count the centimeters.
The bridge between the two systems
Inches and centimeters meet more often than any other pair of units.
- 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters
- 1 centimeter ≈ 0.3937 inch
- 1 inch = 25.4 millimeters
- 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters
Both numbers come from the same place: the 1959 definition of the inch as exactly 25.4 millimeters. They are exact, not approximations.
Are the conversion factors exact?
Yes. Since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, these US customary units have been defined by fixed metric values rather than by physical standards.
| Unit | Exact definition |
|---|---|
| 1 inch | exactly 25.4 mm |
| 1 foot | exactly 304.8 mm |
| 1 yard | exactly 914.4 mm |
| 1 mile | exactly 1609.344 m |
That fixed link is why a converter can move between the two systems with no rounding error beyond the digits it chooses to display.
Why do US and UK length units match but gallons differ?
Length units are identical in the United States, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. An inch is the same length everywhere, so there is no such thing as a "US inch" and an "imperial inch". Volume is a different story: a US gallon is 3.785 liters and an imperial gallon is 4.546 liters, about 20% apart.
The divergence is historical. When the gallon was standardized, each country kept its own older definition, while the inch was unified by the 1959 agreement. So gallons still differ, but inches do not.
Fractions, decimals and precision
Metric work is done in decimal fractions. US customary work is often done in fractions of an inch: 1.5 cm is about 9/16 inch, because dividing an inch into 16 parts and taking nine of them lands closest (9/16 in = 14.29 mm, nearest to 15 mm). This is why a US tape measure is marked in 1/16, 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 inch. To convert a fraction to centimeters, turn it into a decimal first, then multiply by 2.54.
Quick conversion table
| Centimeters | Millimeters | Inches |
|---|---|---|
| 1 cm | 10 mm | 0.394 in |
| 2.54 cm | 25.4 mm | 1 in |
| 5 cm | 50 mm | 1.969 in |
| 10 cm | 100 mm | 3.937 in |
| 15 cm | 150 mm | 5.906 in |
| 20 cm | 200 mm | 7.874 in |
| 30 cm | 300 mm | 11.811 in |
Common real-world sizes
- US Letter paper: 8.5 × 11 in (215.9 × 279.4 mm)
- US dollar bill: 6.14 × 2.61 in (156 × 66.3 mm)
- US quarter: about 0.955 in (24.26 mm) across
- Credit card: 3.37 × 2.13 in (85.60 × 53.98 mm)
- Smartphone screen: roughly 5.4–6.7 in diagonal
Which unit should I use?
- Inches in the US for screens, construction, and paper (Letter is 8.5″ × 11″), and for anything sold to US buyers.
- Millimeters for precision: 3D printing, electronics, sewing, anything under a centimeter where 1 mm matters.
- Centimeters for everyday metric measuring: school, crafts, body measurements, and most of the world.
When do you need to convert?
Switching systems is rarely a daily need; most people use whichever system their country uses. Conversion comes up at specific moments:
- A monitor is sold with an inch measurement while the desk is measured in centimeters.
- Imported furniture or equipment arrives with millimeter drawings while the room is measured in feet.
- Health data gives height in feet and inches and weight in pounds.
- Maps and race results use miles while navigation uses kilometers.

Frequently asked questions
How many millimeters are in a centimeter?
Ten. One centimeter is 10 millimeters.
Which is bigger, an inch or a centimeter?
An inch. One inch is 2.54 centimeters, so it is about two and a half times as long.
Why doesn't the US use metric?
The US came close. Congress passed the Metric Conversion Act in 1975, but it was voluntary and was never enforced. In practice, science, medicine and much of manufacturing already work in metric.
Are US and UK length units the same?
Yes. Both have used the same definitions since 1959. Volume units differ: a US gallon is about 20% smaller than an imperial gallon.
How many inches are in a meter?
About 39.37, since 1 meter is 100 centimeters and one inch is 2.54 centimeters.
